Founded in 2014, ART of Hearts, Inc. is a non-profit organization fostering sustainable arts education & art therapy programming for children in developing countries.

Born in Liberia, West Africa, our Founder Jewel emigrated to America at the age of six due to Liberia's Civil War. Twenty years later, she would finally be returning home. While in the planning stages of the trip, Jewel knew without question that she wanted to give back to her country in some way. A studied artist and designer, she was able to put together an art workshop at a local school in Monrovia, Liberia's capital.

The results of that first workshop were eye-opening. Jewel found that not only were the children happy to draw, paint and express themselves through art, they were excited to simply have the materials to create! There was an evident need and appreciation for art - a resource many children do not have the opportunity to take advantage of. Thus, ART of Hearts was birthed.

While she set out to help and hopefully change lives through art, the wonderfully warm and talented children who have participated in the art therapy workshops in-turn, have helped change Jewel's life forever.

Art is an empowering form of expression and communication where function, creation and learning are intertwined. It allows us to develop new ways of thinking and conveying emotions and feelings that might not be understood through the printed or spoken word alone. Art is truly a universal language that transcends culture and language barriers, and has the potential to serve as a source for new, enriching possibilities.

"The benefits of introducing the arts cultural practices into learning environments showcase a balanced intellectual, emotional and psychological development of individuals and societies. Such education not only strengthens cognitive development and the acquisition of life skills – innovative and creative thinking, critical reflection, communicational and inter-personal skills, etc – but also enhances social adaptability and cultural awareness for individuals, enabling them to build personal and collective identities as well as tolerance and acceptance, appreciation of others. The positive impact it gives on the development of societies ranges from cultivating social cohesion and cultural diversity to preventing standardization and promoting sustainable development." - UNESCO
